Doing pure maths about electricity and magnets, his equations whispered a shock: light is a wave โ€” and there must be invisible cousins of light nobody can see! He predicted radio waves on paper before anyone ever made one.

1887 ยท Germany

He made a spark jump on one side of his lab โ€” and across the room, a metal loop sparked by itself, touched by nothing! The invisible wave had flown across the room. Asked what it was for, he said: "Nothing, I guess!" ๐Ÿ˜„

3 How Does a Satellite "Catch" a Wave?

4 The Hair-Thin Glass Cable

The trick is called total internal reflection โ€” light enters the glass thread at a shallow angle, and the inside wall acts like a perfect mirror. The light bounces and bounces, and can never escape โ€” so it follows the glass anywhere, even under an ocean! Press the button to fire the laser:

๐Ÿ… The mind behind it โ€” Charles Kao (1966): everyone knew light "died" after a few metres in glass. Kao asked the question nobody asked: "Is it the light's fault... or is the glass just DIRTY?" He proved super-pure glass could carry light for kilometres. People laughed โ€” then Corning made the pure glass in 1970, and today one strand carries millions of conversations. Kao won the Nobel Prize in 2009. ๐Ÿ’ญ His gift? He refused to blame the light.
