1 IP โ€” The House Address

Four numbers, four boxes of eight switches ๐Ÿ 

Every device on a network needs an address so knocks can find it. An IP address looks like 192.168.1.7 โ€” four numbers, dots between them. But WHY four? And why does each one stop at 255? The drawing below answers both:

๐Ÿ  One street, four houses. Notice they all start 192.168.1. โ€” that's the street name. Only the last number changes โ€” that's the house number. And 192.168.1.1 is almost always the router: the gate of the whole street!

Each number is ONE byte = 8 switches. All off = 0. All on = 255. That's why 256 is impossible in an IP address!

32 switches = about 4.3 billion addresses. In 1981 that felt endless...

Every phone, laptop, fridge and TV joined. So engineers built IPv6 โ€” so many addresses you could label every grain of sand on Earth, many times over. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

2 Public vs Private โ€” The Compound Gate

Your flat number vs the compound's street address ๐Ÿข

Here's the idea that confuses everyone โ€” until they see the compound. Inside a compound, flats are "Flat 3", "Flat 7". Those numbers repeat in every compound in Nigeria! The postman doesn't care โ€” he only needs the compound's address on the main road. Same with IPs:

๐Ÿ”‘ Spot a private address instantly โ€” they ALWAYS start with one of these three: 10.anything ยท 192.168.anything ยท 172.16-31.anything. See 192.168. anywhere? That's somebody's home or office network, never the open internet!
๐Ÿ” NAT โ€” the gate's notebook. When Flat 7 sends a knock out, the router swaps the private number for the compound's public one and writes: "Flat 7 asked for this." When the reply comes back, it looks in the book and delivers it to Flat 7. That's also why nobody outside can knock directly on your laptop โ€” the gate protects you by default! ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
3 Subnets โ€” Which Estate Do You Live In?

The mask decides: street name vs house number ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

A subnet is one estate with its own gate. Devices in the SAME estate talk directly, like neighbours shouting over a fence. Devices in DIFFERENT estates must go through the gate (the router). The subnet mask is just a rule saying "how much of this address is the estate name?"

๐ŸŽญ The mask is just a highlighter pen. /24 (or 255.255.255.0) says: "highlight the first three numbers โ€” that's the estate." Same highlight = neighbours. Different highlight = strangers who need the gate. That's ALL a subnet mask does!

๐Ÿงฎ Same estate or not? Test two addresses:

Using mask /24 โ€” the first three numbers must match!
๐Ÿ”‡Why split into estates? 1) Less noise

Shouting stays inside your own estate instead of disturbing the whole company.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ2) Tidiness

Accounts in one estate, cameras in another, guests in a third. Easy to manage.

If a thief breaks into ONE estate, good fences stop him strolling into all the others. Security people call this segmentation โ€” one of the strongest defences that exists.

4 TCP vs UDP โ€” Two Delivery Styles

The careful courier ๐Ÿšš vs the shouting town-crier ๐Ÿ“ฃ

Both carry your message. But they behave completely differently โ€” and choosing wrong makes things break in ways that confuse people for years. Watch them race, then lose a packet on purpose!

๐Ÿค UDP does NONE of this. No greeting, no permission โ€” it just shouts. That's why UDP is faster, and why TCP is safer. Same road, two personalities!

๐Ÿง The one-line rule

Would a missing piece ruin everything? โ†’ TCP. Would waiting be worse than a small gap? โ†’ UDP. That's the whole decision.

5 DNS โ€” The Name Book

Humans remember names. Computers need numbers. ๐ŸŒณ

You type kodi.koinder.biz; the machine needs 102.89.44.10. DNS is the translator between the two โ€” and it answers in four hops, in less time than a blink:
